Lecture on Pi Phi and Fibonacci at Osterville Library November 21

‘Pi, Phi & Fibonacci’ presented by guest lecturer Jessica Sheppard

November 21 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Pi, Phi & Fibonacci

Ever wonder why certain things just seem to feel right? Why are some musical harmonies more pleasing to our ears? Why do certain works of art strike us as especially beautiful or balanced? And what do seashells, sunflowers, architecture, music, and the human body have in common?

The answer may be math!

Join us for a fascinating exploration of Pi, Phi (the Golden Ratio), and the Fibonacci sequence and discover how numbers and patterns can be found throughout the natural world and human creativity. We’ll explore how mathematicians, artists, musicians, architects, and scientists have used mathematical relationships to understand balance, proportion, harmony, symmetry, and beauty.

From the spirals found in nature to the proportions used in famous works of art and architecture, mathematics has long played a role in our search for order and perfection. You’ll discover surprising connections between seemingly unrelated subjects and see how mathematical patterns can help explain why certain forms, sounds, and designs are so pleasing to us.

Whether you love mathematics or have always thought of yourself as “not a math person,” this program offers a thought-provoking look at the numbers and patterns hiding all around us—and may change the way you see the world!

This program will take place on Saturday November 21st at 11am in the Anne Williams McGraw Atrium
